Abstract.

In this talk I will discuss results on the effective surface tension obtained by homogenization of periodic perimeters. I'll present older results in collaboration with M. Goldman and M. Novaga, and more recent results, in the discrete setting, on the differentiability and crystallinity of the effective surface tension. I will also discuss the construction of "optimal" periodic patterns for reaching some criterion.
