From the mathematical viewpoint, the minimization of integral functionals for vectorial problems involves difficulties related to the right notion of convexity of the energy densities and to the correct relaxation procedure when convexity is missing. Some of the relevant functionals are higher order and the related optimization problems present many technical difficulties which make these problems particularly interesting in the contemporary research scenario."
