Deadline: 5 oct 2026

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Pisa invites applications for two postdoctoral positions funded by the ERC Starting Grant ConFine (PI: Prof. Adolfo Arroyo-Rabasa).

The positions are offered for 2 years (with the possibility of extension for a 3rd year). The official call (bando) is now published.

Official Call & Application Link: The official bando and submission instructions are available at: Official Bando (PDF).

Salary & Tax Exemption: The standard net salary is approximately 2,700 € per month. Researchers eligible for the Italian tax incentive program (Rientro dei Cervelli, Art. 44 D.L. 782010 — having resided and workedstudied outside Italy for at least 2 consecutive years prior to appointment) can benefit from a 90% IRPEF tax reduction, bringing the net salary to approximately 3,400 € – 3,450 € per month.

Research Topics: Successful candidates will conduct research at the intersection of PDEs, Geometric Measure Theory, the Calculus of Variations, and Harmonic Analysis. Research projects include:
- Advancing the state of the art concerning the flat chain conjecture (GMT, HA)
- The geometric version of Bouchitté's vanishing mass conjecture (CV, GMT, HA, OT)
- Theory of $\mathcal A$-free measures (CV, GMT, HA)
- Fine properties of varifolds with bounded first variations (CV, GMT)
- Fine properties of $BD$ and $BV^{\mathcal{A}}$ functions (CV, GMT, HA)
- Aspects of optimal transport in the flow of measures along tangential directions (GMT, OT)

Starting Dates & Profile: Starting dates are flexible between late 2026 and mid-2027. Selected postdocs will work closely with the PI and the research group, participate in international workshops, and contribute to group activities. Teaching is not mandatory, though teaching opportunities are available for those wishing to expand their academic record.

Application Materials & Submission Instructions: Applications must be submitted exclusively through the official PICA Cineca platform at https://pica.cineca.it/unipi/. The strict deadline for submitting applications is 5 October 2026 at 13:00 CEST.

Candidates must upload the following documents:

- Valid ID & Tax Code: A copy of a valid passport or ID card, plus a copy of your Italian Codice Fiscale (foreign applicants can generate the code automatically during the PICA registration process).
- Curriculum Vitae: A comprehensive scientific and professional CV covering degrees, research experience, conference talks, and awards (dated and signed, unless authenticated via SPID).
- PhD Certificate: Copy of your PhD diploma or official foreign certificate specifying the elements and duration of the program. Documents written in English, French, German, Spanish, or Italian do not require translation; foreign degree equivalence is assessed directly by the committee for the purpose of the call.
- Selected Publications (Max 3): Up to 3 publications (which can include your doctoral thesis), each uploaded as a PDF file (max 30 MB each), accompanied by a signed list of the submitted works. Links to external websites are not accepted in place of PDF files.
- Additional Scientific Credentials: Any further certificates, diplomas, or awards documenting research merit.

Letters of Recommendation: While not submitted through the administrative PICA portal, having two letters of recommendation sent on your behalf is a crucial component of the scientific evaluation:

- If your referees have not yet sent letters: Please ask them to email their letters directly to Prof. Adolfo Arroyo-Rabasa at adolfo.rabasa@unipi.it.
- If your referees already submitted letters during the earlier expression of interest phase, they do not need to be resent.

Interview: Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed remotely on 19 October 2026 at 10:00 CEST. The colloquium will be conducted entirely in English.

Informal Inquiries: Before or during the application process, informal questions regarding the research project can be addressed directly to Prof. Adolfo Arroyo-Rabasa: adolfo.rabasa@unipi.it.
