Deadline: 21 may 2026
Applications are now open at https://applications.gssi.it/postdoc for
a 24 months (renewable) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (incarico postdottorale)
and
a 24 months (renewable) Research Contract (contratto di ricerca)
at Gran Sasso Science Institute, L'Aquila (Italy), with a flexible start date from September 1st 2026 (PI of the project: Prof. Sara Daneri). Notice that in order to compete for both positions one has to submit two different applications. Applications must be submitted through the GSSI website: https://applications.gssi.it/postdoc no later than 15:00 CET on 21 May 2026. More details on the documents to be uploaded for each of the two positions are available in the official calls at https://applications.gssi.it/postdoc.
Project description: The project SEASTAR aims at gaining deep insight into the emergence of different patterns observed in nature (such as stripes, columns, checkerboards or droplets) from the competition between short-range attractive and long-range repulsive interactions. In particular, it aims at a rigorous explanation in paradigmatic physical settings of the following universal and still poorly understood features: symmetry breaking, regular geometric shapes and periodicity.
Candidate Profiles: (Postdoctoral Research Fellowship) The ideal candidate holds a PhD in Mathematics, with a strong background in one of the following fields: calculus of variations, geometric measure theory, functional and geometric inequalities, regularity theory, mathematical physics. Candidates will be evaluated on mathematical maturity, research potential and the relevance of their profile to the themes of the project. (Research Contract) The ideal candidate has a background in one of the following fields: calculus of variations, geometric measure theory, functional and geometric inequalities, regularity theory, mathematical physics and should obtain his or her PhD title within 6 months from the opening of the call. Candidates will be evaluated on mathematical maturity, research potential and the relevance of their profile to the themes of the project.
Other information: The gross salary ranges from €55,000 (for the Research Contract) to €75,000 per year (for the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship). The positions also include funding to support travel and collaboration visits. The positions carry no teaching duties.
Funding: Both positions are funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) within the scheme FIS 3 (Fondo Italiano per la Scienza).
