/We shall discuss an unusual problem about the structure of the 
representations of an integer as a sum of two squares, motivated by a 
model inspired by mathematical physics. It  concerns the probabilistic 
distribution of the solutions, in the cases when an integer can be   
represented in many ways as a sum of two squares. The problem is studied 
with methods involving combinatorics, the arithmetic of elliptic curves, 
algebraic geometry, and probabilistic number theory./*//*
