Dear Colleague,

We are writing to request your assistance to identify advanced
undergraduate students who may benefit from attending our upcoming
CNA Summer School. If you could post the attached announcement on your
bulletin board or otherwise disseminate the information, we would be very
grateful.

2001 CNA Summer School-Multiscale Problems in Nonlinear Analysis

The first Summer School of the Center for Nonlinear Analysis (CNA) will
be held during the period May 31, 2001 - June 9, 2001.

Recent advances in the study of materials with underlying mathematical
problems at the forefront of traditional theories have motivated new
developments in applied mathematics. In this Summer School lectures in
the areas of Mechanics, Analysis, and Scientific Computation will address
current progress in the development of mathematical techniques and
physical theories as these contribute to a better understanding of
multiple scale structures and multiple scale systems. Topics will include
microstructure, coarse graining, thin structures, phase transformations,
magnetic materials, conservation laws, materials design, and related
questions.

The main lecturers are:

Gianni Dal Maso - Stability of the solutions to boundary value problems in
cracked domains with applications to fracture mechanics.

David Kinderlehrer - TBA

Richard James - Deformable Thin Films: From Macroscale to Microscale and
from Nanoscale to Microscale

Shlomo Ta'asan - TBA

Luc Tartar - TBA

Lev Truskinovsky - Some open problems in solid mechanics:
1. phase transitions
2. fracture and plasticity
3. heat conductivity
4. biological tissues

Up-to-date information about this meeting and additional details
(location, transportation, housing, registration, program, etc.) will be
posted on the web at:

http://www.math.cmu.edu/cna/

To register, please complete the registration form located at:

http://www.math.cmu.edu/cna/

Advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and
posdoctoral fellows are encouraged to apply for financial support.
The deadline for applications is April 1, 2001.
