The idea for the Taiwan Winter School in Analysis was conceived through a combination of Prof. Wang Hwai-Chiuan's legacy in analysis in Taiwan and interaction with the Spring Schools on Analysis which have been run in the Czech Republic for more than 25 years Spring Schools in Analysis .

In particular, harmonic analysis after Stein was brought to Taiwan by Prof. Wang Hwai-Chiuan in the 1980s and has been continued by the work of Prof. Lin Chin-Cheng. After the participation of one of the organizers in the Czech school, an idea emerged to continue this training in an on-going manner by instituting bi-annual schools in Taiwan. After further discussion it was decided that an optimal path to continuing harmonic analysis training in Taiwan is to work to gather the Analysis community, to further encourage interaction among students and young researchers working in Analysis, PDE, Function Spaces, along with Harmonic Analysis and other related areas.

We are extremely pleased that the inaugural program of this Taiwan Winter School in Analysis will feature as principal speakers Prof. Andrea Cianchi of the University of Florence and Prof. Luboš Pick of Charles University in Prague. Both Profs. Cianchi and Pick have extensive experience in giving courses to train students, while Prof. Pick has been a principal organizer of the Paseky Spring Schools on Analysis for many years.

Speaker: Prof. Andrea Cianchi

Title. Elliptic PDEs with Orlicz-type nonlinearities and related Sobolev inequalities.

Abstract. An overview of diverse optimal embeddings for Orlicz-Sobolev spaces will be offered. Orlicz-Sobolev embeddings into Orlicz spaces, Orlicz-Lorentz spaces, and spaces of continuous functions will be presented. Trace embeddings will also be considered. The role of these embeddings in some regularity results for solutions to nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations and problems of the calculus of variations under growth conditions of non-polynomial type will be described.

Speaker Prof. Luboš Pick

Title. Isoperimetric inequalities and Sobolev embeddings
