The variational models describe broad scope of natural phenomena. Lavrentiev's phenomenon touches on the negative answer to the fundamental question in the calculus of variations: whether minimizers can be approximated in a relevant way by sufficiently regular functions. This issue is closely related to the approximation properties of function spaces where we expect the minimizers to live. On the other hand, when this obstacle is absent, one can approach to prove the regularity of minimizers in some approximate procedure. The workshop will take place on 20th, 21st, and in the morning of 22nd of November 2023, at the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics, University of Warsaw, Banacha 2.
