The workshop, organized as a summer school, will take place from June 7 to 11, 2027. Its central theme will be the study of variational and geometric problems through advanced methods developed in the field of the Calculus of Variations. The workshop aims to bring together leading experts in the field to provide PhD students and early-career researchers with an introduction to these topics and the modern techniques used to address them.
The workshop will be primarily dedicated to three high-level minicourses, each consisting of approximately 6 hours of lectures, for a total of 18 hours overall. These minicourses will be delivered by Ailana Fraser, Alessandro Giacomini, and Bozhidar Velichkov, who have already kindly accepted our invitation to participate. Their courses will explore advanced and contemporary developments in variational and geometric problems, offering participants a broad overview of the field. The morning sessions will be devoted to these minicourses, giving the workshop a strong pedagogical character and offering PhD students and early-career researchers valuable insights into ideas, techniques, and current research directions. The overall program has been intentionally designed with a relatively light schedule, with the aim of maximizing both scientific interaction and pedagogical effectiveness. The afternoons will be dedicated to informal networking and a selection of scientific talks, providing both senior and junior researchers with the opportunity to present their recent results. To further encourage the active involvement of early-career participants, a dedicated poster session is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. In addition, each day will include time for open discussion, promoting interaction and the exchange of ideas among all participants.
Inclusivity and diversity are foundational principles of this event. We have paid particular attention to ensuring gender balance, ensuring equitable representation both within the organizing committee and among the invited speakers. We are also strongly committed to promoting scientific and geographical diversity: the program is designed to bridge geometric and variational communities while bringing together participants from a wide range of countries, including Austria, Canada, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland.
By combining scientific excellence with an inclusive educational approach, we believe this event will offer a valuable experience for early-career mathematicians. To further support this goal, we apply for funding for PhD students and junior researchers with limited financial resources, thereby facilitating their participation. Overall, the school is designed to cultivate a highly stimulating, internationally representative, and diverse academic environment that actively supports and promotes the academic development of early-career participants.
