Willmore Postdoctoral Fellowship at Durham University

created by bourne on 18 Jan 2017

Deadline: 13 feb 2017

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is investing in excellence and seeks to appoint an outstanding postdoctoral researcher as their first Willmore Fellow. This 3-year fixed term position is for candidates who are in the early stages of their research career and have between 2 to 6 years of research experience since their PhD by the closing date of the call. A Durham Willmore Fellowship provides the opportunity to build an independent research career. We plan to advertise one Willmore Fellowship each year. Those appointed are expected to be strong candidates for permanent posts in universities at the end of their fellowships.

For the first Willmore Fellowship, we welcome applications from exceptional scholars with research interests in applied mathematics (other than theoretical particle physics and general relativity). This post offers an exciting opportunity to make a major contribution to the development of the Department‘s research. Preference may be given to candidates with research interests that fit in with existing ones in the Department, in particular partial differential equations, the calculus of variations, solar magnetohydrodynamics and mathematical biology. She or he will be expected to undertake and publish original research of the highest level, to contribute to the research activities of the applied mathematics research unit and of the department as a whole. We expect Willmore Fellows to contribute modestly to teaching, in the form of final year undergraduate project supervision in their area of research.
