The Vienna School of Mathematics currently announces a PhD position in the area of

Geometric analysis under curvature bounds
(University of Vienna, Supervisor: Daniele Semola)

This project is at the interface between geometry, analysis, and topology and involves techniques borrowed from all such areas. We offer 1 position in this area. Possible PhD projects may be concerned with comparison geometry in smooth or nonsmooth contexts, geometric and functional inequalities on curved backgrounds, and regularity theory for geometric partial differential equations. The concrete thesis project will be developed jointly with the successful applicant. The basic requirement for the position is an excellent working knowledge of Riemannian geometry and analysis, and the basics of algebraic topology. The advertised position is associated with the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Vienna and embedded in the key research area Analysis, Geometric Structure, and Mathematical Physics. The successful candidate will become a member of the Vienna School of Mathematics and is expected to actively contribute to its activities. The extent of employment is 30 hours per week. The position will start between September 1st 2026, and November 1st 2026.

The candidates must have a master's degree (or equivalent) in Mathematics at the moment the PhD position starts. The application documents should contain a letter of motivation; the scientific CV with publications list; higher education certificates, diplomas, and transcripts of records; and two letters of recommendation, sent directly to daniele.semola AT univie.ac.at by the person writing the letter. Applications have to be sent to daniele.semola AT univie.ac.at, in a single PDF file. The deadline is 28th February 2026.
