Lettre Mode, Janvier 2019
———————————————————————————————————
candidat, voir http://smai.emath.fr/spip.php?article748
problems and support recovery with mirror-stratifiable functions par
Guillaume Garrigos (ENS Ulm) et Group Invariance, Stability to
Deformations, and Complexity of Deep Convolutional Representations par
Alberto Bietti (INRIA Grenoble).

celine.lacaux at univ-avignon.fr
Alberto Seeger: alberto.seeger at univ-avignon.fr
-la directrice du laboratoire, Marie-Claude Arnaud:
marie-claude.arnaud at univ-avignon.fr
-le directeur adjoint du laboratoire, Samuel Amstutz:
samuel.amstutz at univ-avignon.fr

3) Open PhD position in Antwerp on the verification of AI-enabled
systems
De : Perez Guillermo Alberto
Verification of AI-Enabled Systems: Making artificial intelligence safe
* Position. A PhD position is open at the University of Antwerp,
Belgium. The
position is funded by running FWO (Research Foundation - Flanders)
projects at
the department of Mathematics and Computer Science. Funding is provided
for four
years.
* Summary of the proposed topic. Recently, there has been a boom in the
number
of efficient artificial intelligence techniques applied to problems
which are
(theoretically) hard or even undecidable. Unfortunately, though, such
techniques
usually do not come with formal guarantees. This raises the following
question:
Can we leverage techniques from verification to complement artificial
intelligence
algorithms with reasonable guarantees? We propose to answer this
question in
three steps. First, we will study the expressiveness of different
machine-learned models as well as verification-like problems to assert
properties that they guarantee. Second, we will focus on reinforcement
learning
algorithms with formal correctness guarantees as well as the assumptions
under
which these guarantees are valid. Finally, we will implement those
algorithms
in proof-of-concept tools and compare them with the state-of-the-art
verification tools based on automata and logic.
* Profile: A strong base in theoretical computer science or mathematics.
* Starting dates. At any time during 2018--2019, preferably as soon as
possible.
* Salary. Gross salary starting around 2,3K euros / month for a PhD
student. In
addition, advantages include complete health insurance, a holiday bonus,
and
an end-of-the-year bonus
(http://www.uantwerpen.be/en/jobs/what-do-we-offer/salaries/).
* The research environment. The University of Antwerp
(http://www.uantwerp.be) is one of
the major Belgian universities in the city of Antwerp. It has more than
20.000
students, 16% of which come from abroad. The Formal Techniques in
Software
Engineering research group, headed by Prof. Guillermo A. Perez, is part
of the
Mathematics and Computer Science Department of the Faculty of Sciences.
The
group maintains a large number of active collaborations with other
research
groups in computer-aided verification across Europe and the USA. We also
participate in the Belgian Federated Center for Verification
(http://cfv.ulb.ac.be) that gathers all the Belgian research groups
active in
computer aided verification and hosts a monthly seminar with renowned
guest
speakers. The working language is English. The PhD may be carried out
under the
co-supervision of Prof. Floris Geerts, part of the ADReM Data Lab,
with expertise in databases, logic, and complexity.
* Further information and application. Potential candidates can contact
Prof.
Perez (guillermoalberto.perez [at] uantwerpen [dot] be) or Prof.
Geerts (floris.geerts [at] uantwerpen [dot] be).
If you are interested, please contact us before March 2019.

4) Open Post-doc positions in Toulouse on polynomial optimization
De : Victor Magron
Tremplin COPS (Certified OPtimization for cyber-physical System
verification)
(2 years Tremplin-ERC Starting Grant research project, 2019-2020)
Funded by the French national research agency (ANR).
* Positions. Several Post-doc positions are available in the MAC team at
LAAS CNRS, Toulouse. These positions are funded by the Tremplin-COPS
project (see above), under the lead of Dr. Victor Magron.
* Summary of the research project. Simple mistakes arising in the design
of modern cyber-physical systems can have tragic impacts, from human and
economic points of view. In particular, for embedded systems, one tries
to avoid incidents such as the Patriot missile crash in 1991, the FDIV
Pentium bug in 1994 or more recently the collision of Google's
self-driving car in 2016.
To ensure the safety of such systems, modern verification frameworks
still have limited capacities of handling nonlinear optimization
problems involving polynomials. This leads to either inaccurate bounds
or high analysis time.
Tremplin-COPS proposes to take up challenges in two different ways:
first, by designing, analyzing and implementing new certification
algorithms, then by modeling important problems arising in nonlinear
system, e.g. cyber-physical systems. The ambition is to design a hybrid
numeric/symbolic framework that is expected to handle issues such as
ill-conditioning, scalability, complexity, better than traditional
approaches.
Overall, the goal of Tremplin-COPS is to implement preliminary
theoretical and practical results related to the certification and
modeling of polynomial optimization problems.
* Starting dates. At any time during the project.
* Salary. Annual brut salary is 50,000 euros.
* The research environment. The research will be advised by Victor
Magron and pursued in collaboration with other researchers from the MAC
team. This shall involve potential interactions with Didier Henrion and
Jean-Bernard Lasserre.
* Required skills. Motivated candidates should hold a PhD degree in
either applied mathematics or computer science, with excellent results.
They are expected to have a solid background in either optimization and
control, real algebraic geometry or computer algebra. Good programming
skills are also required. Knowledge of French does not constitute a
per-requisite. The candidates are kindly asked to send an e-mail with
"Post-doc candidate" in the title, a CV and publication track record, to
victor [dot] magron [at] laas [dot] fr.
