Le groupe MODE lance un appel à candidature en vue du renouvellement de 
6 membres du comité de liaison. Cette année, les membres sortant sont:

The Department of Mathematics of Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain, 
led by Enrique Zuazua, offers 2 PhD Contracts to carry out mathematical 
and computational research in Partial Differential Equations and their 
control, with excellent facilities within a worldwide academic, research 
and technological network.

This position is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced 
Grant “DYCON – Dynamic Control”.

Research activities will be focused in some of the priority lines of the

3- Givens Associate positions at the Mathematics and Computer Science 
(MCS) Division, Argonne National Laboratory

The Mathematics and Computer Science (MCS) Division at Argonne National 
Laboratory is developing innovative techniques in numerical computing 
and computational mathematics. The Givens Associate program is intended 
to encourage graduate students who are beginning careers in numerical 
analysis or computational mathematics. Candidates must be in an 
accredited Ph.D. program in applied mathematics, computer science, 
computational science, statistics, or a related field at a U.S. 
university (U.S. citizenship is not required).

Givens Associates will work actively with MCS scientists designing, 
analyzing, and implementing numerical and statistical algorithms.  For

PhD student position 1:
A PhD scholarship is available in the framework of the Einstein Visiting 
Fellow programme at TU Berlin within the Collaborative Research Center 
”Control of self-organizing nonlinear systems: Theoretical methods and 
concepts of application”. A successful candidate is supposed to work 
under the supervision of Eduard Feireisl on problems related to the 
mathematical theory of fluid mechanics. Basic knowledge of PDE’s and 
functional analysis, including the framework of Sobolev spaces and weak 
solutions is required. The emphasis will be put on the concept of 
generalized solutions, their stability and asymptotic behavior under 
general stochastic perturbations.

PhD student position 2:
A PhD scholarship is available in the framework of the Einstein Visiting 
Fellow programme at TU Berlin within the Collaborative Research Center 
”Control of self-organizing nonlinear systems: Theoretical methods and 
concepts of application”. A successful candidate is supposed to work 
under the supervision of Eduard Feireisl on problems related to the 
mathematical theory of fluid mechanics. Basic knowledge of PDE’s and

Dear colleagues,

We are advertising several PhD and postdoctoral positions for a project
on “Structured Low-Rank Matrix/Tensor Approximation: Numerical
Optimization-Based Algorithms and Applications” (2018-2021). This
excellence-of-science (EOS) project involves a consortium of four
Belgian universities: KULeuven (L. De Lathauwer, B. De Moor, P.
Patrinos, M. Van Barel), VUB (I. Markovsky, M. Ishteva), UCL (P.A.
Absil, F. Glineur) and UMons (N. Gillis).

We are seeking outstanding candidates who have obtained a master’s or
doctoral degree in mathematical engineering, computer science,
electrical engineering, mathematics or physics. Strong candidates have a
proven record in numerical mathematics, optimization, systems & control,
machine learning and/or signal processing. A good knowledge of linear
algebra is mandatory but experience with tensor techniques is not
required. Candidates must be fluent in English.

10- Mini-cours GdR MOA en prélude de SMAI-MODE 2018, March 26-27

The GdR MOA (Mathematics of Optimization and Applications 
http://gdrmoa.math.cnrs.fr/) is providing a mini-course on March 26-27 
in prelude to the SMAI-MODE conference (http://smai-mode2018.imag.fr/ 
March 28-30). The conference and the course take place at the Escandille 
conference center (http://www.escandille.com/) in Autrans, in the heart 
of the Vercors Massif (about one hour from Grenoble).

This year, the course will be taught by Julien Mairal (INRIA Grenoble 
https://lear.inrialpes.fr/people/mairal/) and the theme will be 
"Optimization and Learning" with focuses on sparsity and large-scale 
learning. It will be taught in English and include both mathematical and 
computational aspects.

Important Information:
- There are limited places: The course is open to PhD students in 
priority, but Academics, Master students, and Postdocs may also apply
- Every attendee has to register for the SMAI-MODE conference
