Dijon (2018)
(source : A. Cabot)

8- SIAM Annual Meeting (AN18), Portland, OR, July 9-13, 2018
(source : M. Théra)

Dear Colleagues,

The SIAM Activity Group on Optimization has been asked to sponsor a set
of minisymposia for the SIAM Annual Meeting (AN18), to be held in
Portland, OR, July 9-13, 2018.

If you wish to organize a minisymposium, please send email to Michael
Friedlander (mpf at cs.ubc.ca) with the following information by January 3,
2018:
tentative session title;
names and contact information of four confirmed speakers (the organizer
may be one of the speakers).

It's also possible to organize a collection of 3-4 posters grouped
around a central theme (a "poster minisymposium"). This can have an
independent theme, or can be attached to a regular lecture-based
minisymposium. Guidance on submissions is available at the SIAM AN18
submission website.

Other guidance from the Annual Meeting organizers:

Minisymposium proposals are due by January 10, 2018; contributed
lecture, poster and minisymposium and presentation abstracts are due by
January 31, 2018.

All SIAG-sponsored minisymposium submissions should include an
accessible introduction to a topic, with an emphasis on communicating
across disciplinary boundaries so that non-experts can understand the
topic’s motivation, key issues, and impact.
Please be sure to consider the diversity of SIAM’s broad membership
(across academia/industry/government, geography, gender, seniority,
etc.) when determining participants in SIAG-sponsored submissions.
To ensure balance, SIAM prefers that a single individual not be the
organizer of more than one minisymposium. In addition, SIAM discourages
minisymposia in which most of the speakers or co-authors come from the
same institution.

Regards,
Michael Friedlander
(as Program Director for SIAM Activity Group in Optimization)

9- VARIATIONAL ANALYSIS AND APPLICATIONS, Erice (Sicily), August
28–September 5, 2018
(source : M. Théra)

We are pleased to announce that the International Workshop on
VARIATIONAL ANALYSIS AND APPLICATIONS
will take place at Erice (Sicily) during the period August 28–September
5, 2018 under the auspices of the International School of Mathematics G.
STAMPACCHIA; the Workshop will be directed by H. Attouch, G. Buttazzo,
P. Daniele, A. Maugeri.

Following earlier workshops held in Taormina in 1998, and in Erice in
1994, 2000, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2012, 2015, the Workshop aims at
presenting state-of-the-art and current research directions in
variational analysis and partial differential equations and systems,
fields in which Guido Stampacchia was a master. The meeting will be
hosted at the «Ettore Majorana» Foundation and Centre for Scientific
Culture in Erice. Variational analysis encompasses a large area of
modern mathematics, including the classic calculus of variations, the
theories of perturbation, approximation, subgradient, subderivatives,
set convergence and variational inequalities. The workshop is dedicated
to Professor Alexander Ioffe in the occasion of his 80th birthday and
aims at offering a review of the results achieved in the above research
themes, specifying the used methods and pointing out the open problems
together with outlines of the new research trends in the principal
topics of variational analysis and applications

During the opening ceremony of the International Workshop, a Gold Medal
in honour of Guido Stampacchia will be assigned for the sixth time,
after an international competition, to a young mathematician, whose age
be not greater than 35 years at the date of December 31st 2018, for his
scientific contribution in the field of Variational Analysis. All the
information about the medal can be found on the web site
www.varana.org/2018. The five previous medals were awarded to:
Tristan Rivière 2003
Giuseppe Mingione 2006
Camillo De Lellis 2009
Ovidiu Savin 2012
Alessio Figalli 2015

Nominations for the medal, which should include the motivation at the
basis of the nomination and a curriculum vitae of the nominee, must be
sent, before March 31st, 2018, by email to
umi at dm.unibo.it or dipmat.umi at unibo.it
or by mail to
Commissione Premio Stampacchia

13- Mathematical Tapas. Volume 2 (From Undergraduate to Graduate Level).
Springer (December 2017), 265 pages, author: Jean-Baptiste
Hiriart-Urruty
(source : J.-B. Hiriart-Urruty)

This textbook presents a collection of interesting and sometimes
original exercises for motivated students in mathematics.
Written in the same spirit as Volume 1, this second volume of
Mathematical Tapas includes carefully selected problems at the
intersection between undergraduate and graduate level. Hints, answers
and (sometimes) comments are presented alongside the 222 “tapas” as well
as 8 conjectures or open problems. Topics covered include metric,
normed, Banach, inner-product and Hilbert spaces; differential calculus;
integration; matrices; convexity; and optimization or variational
problems.

Suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in
mathematics, this book aims to sharpen the reader’s mathematical problem
solving abilities.
