Dear colleague,

the European union has provided funding for several doctoral positions
in mathematics through the Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training
Network (ITN) ModCompShock (Modelling and Computation of Shocks and
Interfaces). ModCompShock provides an international and highly visible
framework covering a wide range of conceptual expertise. It focuses on
the development of innovative mathematical methods and computational
techniques in the general area of nonlinear hyperbolic and convection
dominated partial differential equations; see http://modcompshock.eu for
more information. Beneficiaries are

    University of Sussex
Universite Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris 6
    Rheinisch-Westfaelische Technische Hochschule Aachen
    Universita degli Studi di Catania
Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas
    Universita degli Studi dell'Aquila
    Universidad de Malaga
    Universitetet i Oslo

Partner organisations include

    Eidgenoessische Technische Hochschule Zuerich
    University of Oxford
    Universitaet Zuerich
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology

We would be very grateful if you could pass this information and the
attached job ad of the Aachen group on to interested students. Thank you
very much for your help.

Best regards,
Wolfgang Dahmen
Michael Westdickenberg

Our profile
===========

Applications are invited for TWO doctoral positions in mathematics at
RWTH Aachen University. The positions are funded through the EU
Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) ModCompShock
(Modelling and Computation of Shocks and Interfaces). ModCompShock
provides an international and highly visible framework covering a wide
range of conceptual expertise. It focuses on the development of
innovative mathematical methods and computational techniques in the
general area of nonlinear hyperbolic and convection dominated partial
differential equations; see http://modcompshock.eu for more
information.

Possible research topics at RWTH Aachen University include:

1.) Development of innovative, new numerical methods for hyperbolic
conservation laws, exploring for instance possible combinations of
provably tight lower and upper a posteriori error bounds for transport
equations with a suitable "linearization" of the problem (kinetic
formulation, relaxation).

2.) Numerical study of compressible flows over rough surfaces, using
upscaling techniques to derive effective boundary conditions on a
virtual smooth boundary and reduced basis methods to significantly
speed up the evaluation of the resulting cell problems.

3.) Development of a "steepest descent" numerical method for the
compressible Euler equations inspired by the principle of maximal
entropy production. It combines ideas from optimal transport theory
and curves of maximal slopes on metric spaces.

The positions will be for three years, at least three months of which
are to be spent abroad at one of the partner universities or industry
partners in the ITN. Doctoral researchers are hired under an
employment contract and benefit from a monthly living allowance,
social security cover, a mobility and family allowance.

Your profile
============

We are looking for candidates with strong mathematical skills and
interest in nonlinear partial differential equations. Applicants must
hold a Master's or equivalent degree in mathematics. Knowledge in
Analysis, Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computation, Mathematical
Modeling in Applied Sciences (or a combination thereof) will be
required. Solid written and spoken English is necessary to publish new
results and present them at conferences and in mathematical journals.

At the time of recruitment, the candidates must be in their first four
years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research
careers and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree.

At the time of recruitment, researchers must not have resided or
carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for
more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference
date. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need further
clarification about these requirements that are imposed by the EU
funding agency.

Your duties and responsibilies
==============================

Doctoral researchers will work on a numerical or theoretical research
project of our group, participate in the activities of the ITN
(summer/winter schools, workshops, etc.), and pursue a doctoral
degree. At least three months will be spent at one of the partner
universities or industry partners in the ITN.

Please send a letter of motivation, curriculum vitae, copies of your
degree certificates, and a summary of your Master thesis
electronically as a single .pdf-file to mwest at instmath.rwth-aachen.de.
Please also include the names of two references who have agreed to
provide letters of recommendation, with their contact information.

Applications are welcome until the positions are filled.
