Trimester "Analysis and Geometry in Metric Spaces" in Madrid
Wednesday 1 apr 2015 -- Tuesday 30 jun 2015
ICMAT, Madrid, Spain
The purpose of this message is to draw your attention to a Research Term on
Analysis and Geometry in Metric Spaces that will take place at ICMAT (Madrid,
Spain) in April-June 2015.

We are organizing a series of activities at ICMAT which will bring together a
number of first rank specialists in this growing trend. They consist of four
introductory courses to this subject, a series of seminars and one large workshop.
The courses will take place in May 2015, so that non-specialists interested in
learning something about this new field will be more prepared to face the
subsequent workshop (from June 1st to June 5th). This will serve as a platform to
launch a number of specialized seminars in June. There will also be a few seminars
(or a less specialized character) in April.

The organization will offer a number of grants for young researchers covering
accomodation for 6 weeks, including the introductory courses and the workshop.

More information will appear in the web (see below)

We kindly ask you to forward this announcement to anyone you think might be
interested, and we hope to meet you in Madrid in some of these activities. Thank
you very much for your help.

--- Seminars next week ---
* Friday 5 jun 2015

time: 15:00
Aula Magna (Dipartimento di Matematica, Università di Pisa)
Hypersurfaces with almost constant mean curvature
Francesco Maggi (University of Texas at Austin)
Abstract. Motivated by the study of capillarity problems we investigate smooth boundaries with almost constant mean curvature, and quantify their distance from compounds of tangent balls with equal radii in terms of the oscillation of their mean curvature. This is a joint work with Giulio Ciraolo (U. Palermo).

* Wednesday 10 jun 2015

time: 17:30
Sala Seminari (Dipartimento di Matematica, Università di Pisa)
Filling multiples of embedded curves
Robert Young (Courant Institute, New York)
Abstract. Filling a curve with an oriented surface can sometimes be "cheaper by the dozen". For example, L. C. Young constructed a smooth curve drawn on a projective plane in Rn which is only about 1.5 times as hard to fill twice as it is to fill once and asked whether this ratio can be bounded below. We will use methods from geometric measure theory to answer this question and pose some open questions about systolic inequalities for surfaces embedded in Rn.

--- New Papers ---
* Pinamonti, Speight: A Measure Zero Universal Differentiability Set in the Heisenberg Group
* Marchese: Sobolev homeomorphisms with zero Jacobian almost everywhere are residual
* Barilari, Rizzi: On Jacobi fields and canonical connection in sub-Riemannian geometry
--- Modified Papers ---
* Ambrosio, De Lellis, Schmidt: Partial regularity for mass-minimizing currents in Hilbert spaces
* Braides, Chiadò Piat, Piatnitski: Discrete double porosity models
* Marchese, Massaccesi: An optimal irrigation network with infinitely many branching points
