Date: Monday, Jul 20, 2015 -- Friday, Jul 24, 2015

Place: Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM), Barcelona

The present “Summer school on nonlinear PDE’s and applications to image analysis. A scientific tribute to Vicent Caselles” is an event that originates as a homage to the memory and scientific legacy of Vicent Caselles, aiming at the interplay between Image Processing and advanced mathematical techniques. Vicent was an outstanding mathematician that made significant contributions not only to Mathematics but also helped in a crucial way to push the boundaries of several disciplines in Image Processing, being part of a generation of researchers that introduced variational and partial differential equations-based methods as a new and powerful toolbox in order to deal with a wide variety of problems of interest like image segmentation, mathematical morphology, image restoration and inpainting, to name a few.

The goal of this summer school is to train students in order to allow them to reach the state of the art on a number of interesting topics in the junction between mathematical analysis, geometry and image processing and interpretation, while fostering scientific discussions and collaborations among them. It is organized in five courses covering topics as (but not limited to) shape spaces, geometric calculus, digital images, self-similarity, texture modeling, non-local variational models, non-local integro-differential operators and related partial differential equations, variational discretization procedures, denoising, inpainting, image and video restoration.

This event is primarily aimed at PhD students, but it can be also of interest to researchers at any stage with no previous experience on the use of advanced mathematic techniques in the field of Image Processing, be them either mathematicians willing to learn more about the exciting field of image analysis or researchers in Image Processing with little experience in the use of heavy mathematical machinery and modeling tools. As the range of covered topics lies at the crossroads of these fascinating disciplines, we hope that this event will give rise to many scientific discussions, which we will also promote and enhance from the organization.

Invited Speakers: L. Ambrosio, X. Cabrè, S. Masnou, J. M. Morel, M. Rumpf
