3- PhD Position, Optimal Control of Energy Storage, Sussex, UK

A fully funded PhD studentship is available for a project in applied
mathematics at the University of Sussex, England. The project is
concerned with the rigorous analysis of electrical networks with
random energy production and consumption as well as electrical energy
storage. Given processes characterising energy production and
consumption, a key question is which strategy will optimally drive an
electrical energy storage facility.
The projects aims (A) to extend the existing dynamic programming
models for electrical networks with storage, (B) to numerically study
the resulting Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation with semi-Langrangian
numerical methods, (C) to prove well-posedness of the
Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation and the convergence of the
semi-Langrangian methods.
Candidates should have a strong background in at least one of the
areas of Optimal Control, PDEs, Numerical Analysis or Power
Systems. The project will be supervised by Dr Max Jensen
Possible start dates are May 2015 and September 2015. The project
includes a tax free maintenance bursary of £13863 per year, plus a
waiver of UK/EU fees for 3.5 years.

Applications invited for a Postdoctoral position in large-scale
numerical optimization at The University of Luxembourg, within the
Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB); to start as soon as
possible. An excellent opportunity to participate in an established
international collaboration led by Ronan Fleming, LCSB, Michael and
Michael Saunders, Stanford University.
Your profile is a PhD in mathematics, applied mathematics,
computational engineering, mathematical engineering, or a related
discipline. A comprehensive understanding of and evidence of primary
research within numerical optimization is essential. Experience with
development of numerical software is essential. Experience with
efficient numerical solution of large-scale variational inequalities
posed as optimization problems is desirable. No knowledge of biology
is expected, but a willingness to work as part of an interdisciplinary
team is essential. Excellent written English is essential.
Your role will be numerical implementation of novel, globally
convergent optimization algorithms designed for simulation of
high-dimensional systems of chemical reactions. Specifically,
numerical implementation of proposed algorithms involving a sequence
of parametric, sparsely constrained, smooth, large-scale convex
optimization problems.
Fixed-term contract for 1 year, may be extended up to 3 years. Very

Il existe une forte demande d'outils math�matiques et algorithmiques
nouveaux de l'optimisation
en grande dimension appliqu�e dans les domaines de l'apprentissage
statistique et du traitement
de donn�es non-homog�nes. Les jeux de donn�es � traiter, mais aussi
les mod�les qui les r�gissent
contiennent par ailleurs des incertitudes dont il s'agit d'estimer et
de maitriser l'impact.
L'optimisation dans le contexte de donn�es massives, l'analyse
d'incertitudes et l'optimisation
robuste pour minimiser leur influence, sont des probl�matiques qui
apparaissent dans plusieurs
domaines applicatifs dans lesquels le LJK est beaucoup investi :
traitement et indexation
d'images, climatologie et sciences de l'environnement, d�veloppement
durable, g�nomique, analyse
de donn�es multi-media, de donn�es bancaires et financi�res.
Le LJK souhaite recruter un ma�tre de conf�rences, qui cherche �
d�velopper des aspects
m�thodologiques ou applicatifs de ces th�matiques, transverses �
