1- 3 PhD Positions, Road design optim or convex analysis, UBC
(source : D. Aussel)

COCANA (Centre for Optimization Convex Analysis and Nonsmooth
Analysis,https://ocana.ok.ubc.ca/) invites applications for 3 PhD
positions starting September 2015.

The positions will be based at the UBC Okanagan campus
(http://ok.ubc.ca/). The PhD positions are fully funded for 4 years
(2 years funded MSc positions are also available).

The first theme is on road design optimization. The research is
industry sponsored and include the opportunity to develop patents.
Good programming skills (C/C++) are required and optimization or
operations research skills are desired.

The second theme is on computational convex analysis and involves the
creation of new algorithms to compute mathematical objects regularly
used in convex analysis. The background required is good programming
skills (MATLAB, Scilab, or Octave), and a desire to learn convex
analysis.

Historically students with a computer science background have been
very successful in our program (and found positions at Google, Amazon,
or Microsoft), as well as students with a mathematical background and
strong programming skills.

Interested candidates should contact Dr. Yves Lucet, Associate
Professor, Computer Science, Director, Centre for Optimization Convex
Analysis and Nonsmooth Analysis, atyves.lucet at ubc.ca. The deadline
for funded applications is January 31, 2015.

2- PhD in Computational analysis and mathematics of information
(source : M. Thra)

We are looking for outstanding students who are keen to do a PhD in one of
our
core areas of analysis: computational analysis and mathematics of information
(including inverse problems, mathematical imaging, and compressed sensing),
partial differential equations, stochastic analysis and statistics.
The CCA will be holding an open day on the 27th of November 2014, see

http://www.maths.cam.ac.uk/postgrad/cca/D

Deadline for applications is the 15th of January 2015.

Thanks a lot in advance and best wishes!

11- "Modeling and OPtimization: Theory and Applications" (MOPTA) conference
(source : M. Thra)

organized at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, July 20-22, 2015.

MOPTA aims at bringing together a diverse group of people from both
discrete and continuous optimization, working on both theoretical and
applied aspects. There will be invited plenary talks from distinguished
speakers as well as organized sessions and contributed talks, spread
over three days. Our target is to provide a diverse set of exciting new
developments from different areas of optimization research while at the
same time providing a setting which will allow increased interaction
among the participants. We aim to bring together researchers from both the
theoretical and applied communities in the framework of a medium-scale event
who do not usually have the chance to interact in larger meetings.

We welcome contributed talks, and we are also very interested in hearing
from people who could organize a session centered around one of their topics
of expertise. MOPTA sessions have 3 speakers, with 30 mins per presentation
including Q&A's. Speakers will be kindly asked to submit their abstract on
the MOPTA website. The deadline for abstract submission is May 1.

Confirmed plenary speakers:
* Alper Atamtrk (University of California-Berkeley)
* Amir Beck (Technion - Israel Institute of Technology)
* Mirjam Dr (University of Trier)
* Eugene Feinberg (SUNY)
* Ravi Mazumdar (Waterloo)
* Luis Nunes Vicente (Universidade de Coimbra)
* Tong Zhang (Rutgers University)

Please contact Alexander Stolyar (als714 at lehigh.edu) or Martin Takac
(Takac.MT at gmail.com)
if you would like to organize a session for MOPTA.

(source : J-B. Caillau, J-B. Hiriart-Urruty)

loi Gaussienne. Plusieurs applications aux problmes de la production
d'nergie
serviront comme illustrations. Des proprits analytiques (par exemple
convexit,
continuit, diffrentiabilit) seront prsentes. Finalement, la
question de la
stabilit des solutions sous une perturbation de la loi donne (par
exemple
approximation empirique) sera discute.

Dates et lieu : Mardi 9 dcembre  14 heures : 2 fois 1 heure ;
Mercredi 10 dcembre :
1 fois 1 heure. Salle de sminaires MIP, 1er tage du btiment 1R3
de l'IMT,
Universit Paul Sabatier.
