Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Mathematics of Solid and Liquid
Crystals

 Starting salary £29,541 - £36,298 p.a.

Appointment Term:

 1,2 or 3 years fixed term subject to start date

Applications are invited for a 1, 2 or 3 year fixed term (subject to start
date)  postdoctoral research associate post to work on projects in the
Mathematics of Solid and Liquid Crystals under the direction of Professor
Sir John Ball FRS.  The successful applicant will take up the post by 1st
April 2014 but no later than 1 October 2014 and will be based in the Oxford
Centre for Nonlinear PDE (OxPDE) to perform mathematical research on
projects outlined in the job description regarding solid phase
transformations and the Landau–de Gennes theory of liquid crystals or
related topics under the leadership of the investigator and to write this up
for publication and to fully participate in the activities of the research
group.  They may also be required to teach up to four sets of undergraduate
or graduate classes per year.

The post is funded by a European Advanced Investigator grant awarded to
Professor Ball which expires 31st March 2017. The successful candidate will
form part of a team funded mainly by the grant which currently consists of
three postdoctoral research associates and five PhD students.

The successful candidate will be expected to have a PhD awarded or
submitted, in mathematics or a related discipline, a good publication record
judged by the stage of his/her career, expertise in analysis and other
subject areas relevant for the projects listed above together with a
research record in some aspect of nonlinear analysis applied to problems in
mechanics.
