The closing dates for 6 DPhil studentships at the Mathematical Institute
in Oxford are rapidly approaching.
The Centre for Nonlinear PDE are currently advertising three PhD
studentship, with a closing date of 22nd February 2008.
Adverts for these positions can be found on jobs.ac.uk:
http://www.jobs.ac.uk/jobs/YX869/Postgraduate_Studentships/ and on the
OxPDE website: http://www2.maths.ox.ac.uk/oxpde/news/vacancies.php.
The Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (OCIAM)
http://www2.maths.ox.ac.uk/ociam/ are advertising three DPhil
with a closing date of 28 February 2008.
One of these studentships is linked to OxMOS
http://www2.maths.ox.ac.uk/oxmos/ on "modelling dislocation ladders in
Modelling dislocation ladders in fatigue:
Local mismatches in the atomic structure of a crystalline material are
known as dislocations, and act as line sources of stress. Dislocations
move around in a material in response to stress, and may become tangled
(this is the basis of the work-hardening of metals). Under cyclic
loading of a material such as copper it is observed that "ladders" of
dislocations form with a characteristic spacing between regions of high
dislocation density (the rungs of the ladders) and regions of near
pristine material (the gaps in between). It is thought that these
ladders play an important role in the fatigue of the material, but at
present there is no mathematical theory which can predict the formation
or characteristic scale of these remarkably regular structures.
Please bring these studentships to the attention of anyone appropriate.
