Associate Professor (Optimisation or Optimal
Control)
FACULTY OF SCIENCE

Applications are invited for appointment to the position of
Associate Professor in Optimisation or Optimal Control.
Preference will be given to candidates whose expertise
complements the research strengths of the present optimisation
and optimal control group: non-smooth optimisation, nonlinear
optimisation, numerical optimisation, mathematical
programming, optimal control, computational methods and
applications.
The University of New South Wales is one of Australia's
leading Universities. The School of Mathematics, which
comprises the Departments of Applied Mathematics, Pure
Mathematics, and Statistics, is one of the largest and most
successful mathematics schools in Australia. It has an
outstanding record in attracting external research support and
operates an extensive visitors program for research
collaboration. The School of Mathematics has a commitment to
excellence in the service teaching it provides to over 4000
students from a range of Faculties. Staff of the
Department of
Applied Mathematics provide a major part of such teaching, and
are also responsible for the provision of specialist
teaching in
Applied Mathematics at all undergraduate levels (including
honours). It provides a vigorous postgraduate program and
has a
substantial enrolment of high-quality postgraduate students.
The Department of Applied Mathematics has active research
groups in geophysical fluid dynamics, nonlinear phenomena,
computational mathematics, and optimisation and optimal
control. The School has state-of-the-art in-house computing
facilities, as well as access to very high speed and parallel
computing installations.
Essential criteria: a research doctorate in a relevant
mathematical science; an innovative research program; an
excellent record of high quality research and publication
at the
international level; a record of excellent achievement in
teaching, including service teaching, and supervision at
undergraduate and postgraduate levels; a record of effective
academic leadership; understanding of, and willingness to
implement, equity and diversity policies and programs.
Desirable criteria: success in attracting external research
funding; a record of successful interaction or
consultancies with
business or industry.
The salary range for Associate Professor is A$76,956 -
A$84,780 per year depending on qualifications and
experience.
The University reserves the right to fill the position
by invitation or not to fill the position.
The position is full-time (continuing) and is available from
March 2002, or a later date negotiated with the successful
candidate. Membership of a University approved superannuation
scheme is a condition of employment.
