Recent trends in the analysis of spectral problems and applications

The aim of the workshop is to give researchers of different fields the opportunity to meet and discuss recent advances in the mathematical study of spectral problems, often arising in engineering and material sciences as, for example, problems of acoustics resonance, mechanical vibrations, electromagnetic scattering, evolution of quantum systems and, in general, wave propagation in heterogeneous media. The mathematical discussion focuses mainly on recent contributions to the study of eigenvalues of differential operators and related shape optimization problems, Hamiltonian dispersive equations on graphs, and spectral properties of partial differential equations in perturbed waveguides. All these studies share some common features, in view of understanding how the structure and shape of a domain affect the wave propagation of a physical quantity of interest. At the same time, they involve different methods coming from calculus of variations, functional analysis, partial differential equations theory. The interaction among mathematicians, engineers and physicists is expected to provide interesting examples of applications and open problems.
