The study of stable minimal surfaces in Riemannian 3-manifolds with non-negative scalar curvature has a rich history. Recently, in a joint work with O. Chodosh and M. Eichmair, we proved that a connected, orientable, complete, boundaryless 3-manifold with non-negative scalar curvature, containing an area-minimizing cylinder, is flat.
