News

5 PhD positions in DFG Research Training Group "Interfaces, Complex Structures and Singular Limits in Continuum Mechanics"

The Research Training Group "Interfaces, Complex Structures, and Singular Limits in Continuum Mechanics" (DFG-Graduiertenkolleg 2339) announces the opening of five doctorate positions (75 %, TV-L 13, for 3 years) at the Department of Mathematics of Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (four positions) and at the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Regensburg (one position).

The Research Training Group focuses on the development of new mathematical tools in modeling, analysis, and numerics with the perspective to understand complex phenomena observed in fluid mechanics, materials sciences, biological systems, and other applied sciences. Typically, modelling approaches will involve nonlinear partial differential equations.

The doctoral programme offers a structured course programme in partial differential equations, calculus of variations, numerical analysis, scientific computing, mathematical modeling, and professional skills. Doctoral researchers of the Research Training Group benefit from numerous possibilities of scientific exchange both on the national and on the international level. Compatibility of family and work is promoted at both universities. Female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply. Equal opportunity is an essential element of our personnel policy. Applications from handicapped or equated applicants are welcome.

Applicants are asked to submit a CV, copies of certificates of academic qualifications held, a study track record, a copy of a degree thesis, and a statement of the scientific interests. Applications should be sent electronically to guenther.gruen@fau.de and harald.garcke@ur.de.

Seminars next week

Tue 5 December 2023

Jérôme Carrand: Transfer operator techniques in hyperbolic and parabolic dynamics
SNS, Aula Bianchi Lettere, 09:00

The aim of this talk will be to present how versatile spectral properties of transfer operators acting on appropriate anisotropic Banach spaces are when used in the setup of hyperbolic and parabolic dynamical systems. I will first explain how these operators have been used in order to construct and study equilibrium states for Sinaï Billiard maps and flows, in particular the measures of maximal entropy. Then, I will discuss their use to characterize deviations for some renormalisable flows on surface.

Ivan Yuri Violo (Centro De Giorgi, SNS Pisa): Analysis on non-smooth spaces with curvature bounded below
SNS, Aula Bianchi Lettere, 10:00

The goal will be to give an overview of singular metric spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below and of their analytical properties. We will also see how the study of these spaces can have application in the classical smooth setting. In particular I will present some recent results on the stability of Sobolev inequalities and on nodal domains of eigenfunctions.

Marley Young: Integrality results in arithmetic dynamics
SNS, Aula Bianchi Lettere, 11:00

I will give a broad overview of some problems regarding finiteness of integral preperiodic points of rational maps, how these were motivated by analogous unlikely intersections problems in arithmetic geometry, and how equidistribution theorems have been a key tool in both contexts. In particular, I will discuss how quantitative forms of equidistribution (developed via techniques in potential theory and dynamics) have been central in effective and uniform results in both geometry and dynamics.
