"The most striking characteristic of nematic liquid crystals, the defect patterns are still<br>
not understood at a fundamental level and various theories provide competing explanations.<br>
We focus on point defects in 2d and 3d and present recent work on their 
qualitative description and energetic stability. This is joint work with
