PhD Position in stochasticprogramming<br>
A position as PhD Candidate in stochastic programming is available at
the<br>
Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management.<br>
<br>
The Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management
currently<br>
consists of 16 Professors, 6 Adjunct Professors, 16 Associate
Professors,<br>
7 Postdoctoral Fellows and 35 PhD Candidates.<br>
The Department is organized in four groups:<br>
<br>
* Strategy and Management<br>
* Organization, Work Science and Law<br>
* Managerial Economics, Finance and Operations Research<br>
* Health, Safety and Environment<br>

The PhD. Candidate will be appointed for a period of three years with
an optional<br>
fourth year set aside for required duties at the department. The
position is funded<br>
by a research project in cooperation between NTNU, the research council
of<br>
Norway and the Norwegian power grid operator Statnett. A completed
master’s<br>
degree or equivalent, with good results, is required. A background in
mathematical<br>
optimization or operations research is required. Knowledge about energy
systems<br>
and or markets is preferred. Strong academic skills and personal
qualifications will<br>
be emphasized. Personal qualifications will be ascribed high importance.<br>
<br>

The title of the project is “Optimal power network design and
operation”.<br>
The overall objective of the project will be to ensure security of
power supply in the<br>
face of uncertainties on both the supply and demand side, while
optimizing economic<br>
efficiency of the system focusing oncapacity utilization and
transmission losses.<br>
There are two main research activities:<br>
<br>
- Economic dispatch and dynamic network topology:<br>
This research topic will study the possibilities for dynamically
changing the network<br>
topology, including switching individual transmission lines in and out
of operation.<br>
We will develop new optimization models combining economic efficiency
and detailed<br>
modelling of the physical power flows. Dynamic topology switching
models is optimized<br>
in order to study effects on<br>
- Economic cost efficiency in the dispatch<br>
- Throughput improvements<br>
- Reliability<br>
<br>
- Market design for flexible transmission system operation. This
research task will<br>
address the relationships between the physical system and market
design. In future<br>
operational scenarios where one expectsmuch more variation in demand
and supply<br>
it is critical to have better integration between the physical network
and the electricity<br>
markets. A more flexible operational system with transmission switching
and dynamic<br>
reliability management triggers the need to look into how the market
should be<br>
designed to utilize this flexibility.<br>

Industrial<br>

The position is paid according to salary scale code 1017 level 48 in
the national salary<br>
scheme, monthly gross NOK 32591,70, of which 2 % is deducted for the
State Pension<br>

Employees and Civil Servants. Primary residency in Trondheim is a
prerequisite.<br>

A postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Electrical

Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Liege, Belgium.

The position is part of a FNRS-funded collaborative grant
<br>
on the topic of nonsmooth optimization on manifolds. The three PIs of
<br>
the grant are Rodolphe Sepulchre (U. Liege), Pierre-Antoine Absil
<br>
(ULouvain) and Y. Nesterov (ULouvain). The project aims at
<br>
developing new algorithms at the interface between manifold
optimization
<br>
and nonsmooth convex optimization, motivated by large-scale
applications
<br>
in statistics and machine learning.

ORP3 is the EURO peripatetic conference, each edition of which is hosted<br>
