anni 70 e 80 sono stati dimostrati alcuni interessanti criteri<SPAN

standard su una superficie liscia, razionale e minimale, allora esso è razionale
se e solo se la varietà di Prym associata si decompone in somma diretta di
Jacobiane di curve proiettive lisce. D'altra parte, negli ultimi vent'anni è
risultato sempre più evidente come svariati problemi di geometria birazionale
trovino una naturale formulazione nel linguaggio delle categorie
