often the existence of curves with special features on minimal complex surfaces
imposes constraints on the numerical invariants of the surface or on properties
of the canonical system. The reverse is also true, i.e., some characteristics of
the surfaces imply the non existence of curves of given genus or
self-intersection. In this seminar I will discuss some instances of these
